GENIUS OF GEORGES BIZET

Bizet, the creator of Carmen, died at the age of 35, unaware of the enormous popularity his final work would soon enjoy. The program includes music from Carmen and other dramatic works, including the play, L’Arlésienne, and his astounding first symphony, composed at the age of 17.

VENETIAN VESPERS

The unique architecture of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice gave rise to a tradition of works for multiple choirs, including Monteverdi’s Vespers and Gabrieli’s Sacrae symphoniae. Venice’s other most famous son was the prolific and imaginative Vivaldi, master of the baroque concerto.

Maestro Lane leads a program of beloved melodies given new life by their arrangers. Variations on a Theme of Haydn was Brahms’s first orchestral hit. Folk melody takes center stage in Respighi’s Adoration of the Magi, Bartók’s Romanian Dances and Sarasate’s showpiece for solo violin, Zigeunerweisen.

ITALIAN SYMPHONY

As a young man traveling in Italy, Mendelssohn painted watercolors of the countryside, encountered the art of ancient Rome, and sketched his most famous symphony, the Italian. Maestro Schram continues the travel theme with Rossini’s Barber of Seville Overture and R. Strauss’s witty music to Le Bourgeois gentilhomme.
