Dear Reader,
Well, this marks the seventeenth year of collaboration between Sovereign Brass and the Sounds of Summer, presented by the Orlando Philharmonic. Over the years our concerts have evolved into a celebration of music and life based on musical themes. We have explored the music of "Broadway," "Movies," "Military History," a trip "Around the world in 80 minutes," "All American Composers," "Heroes & Villains," the "History of Brass" and the list goes on.
As we search each year to find a suitable subject we find ourselves considering many facets of musical performance. Is it possible to arrange the music related to the theme for brass quintet plus percussion? Will the audience find the subject interesting?…and will we? How much music exists that relates to any certain theme?
This year's search was not unlike others in that we keep a small notebook of ideas and titles that we would like to perform, based on a wide range of possible themes. All of this leads us to our title for this year "Creature from the Brass Lagoon." What evil characters entrance would be complete without the wicked "dah-dan-taaah" of the brass in the score. In music, as in the theater, the "bad guy" roles often offer a wider range of emotion for the performer. Thus, we chose music that exudes a certain amount of latent power and force…a role often similar to that of a brass player in the orchestral literature itself where we often represent dark forces, violence or looming disaster. So this year’s concert , titled "CREATURE FROM THE BRASS LAGOON" conveys the music associated with the villain and anti-hero. There is a wealth of material here as you will hear at our performance on July, 12, 2010 at the Margeson Theater.
We hope you will join us!
Warm Regards,
Jeff Thomas
