(Orlando, FL – May 17, 2010) – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra continues to bring music to Central Florida all summer long with its acclaimed Sounds of Summer Series. The series begins on Monday, June 28, 2010 with Vienna Roast. The program takes place at 7:00 PM in the Margeson Theater in the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, 812 E. Rollins Street, Orlando.

Vienna Roast features Music Director Christopher Wilkins leading musicians of the Philharmonic in a concert that highlights the popular side of Viennese classical music.

“Viennese music developed in cafes, salons and wine bars,” says Maestro Wilkins. “This music, performed by small groups, quickly developed into its own genre.  This program is built upon this tradition.”

Wilkins continues, “Having been the seat of a dominant empire for so long, the city of Vienna was a hub of creative activity for writers, artists, performers, and intellectuals from throughout the Western world.  Viennese music represented a dizzying blend of national heritages and ethnic styles.”  Concertmaster Tamas Kocsis, a native of Hungary, captures the spirit of the gypsy violin tradition on this entertaining program.  “The violin took center stage, and in violin playing the Hungarian school was king.  How fortunate we are to have concertmaster Tamas Kocsis as our soloist!  This is one of our last opportunities to feature Tamas while he is still living in Orlando.  He leaves us in August to become leader (concertmaster) of the great Ulster Orchestra in Belfast, Ireland.  In doing so, he assumes the top job in one of the great orchestras of Europe,” says Wilkins.

The program includes Schubert’s Octet, Kreisler’s Liebesleid and Liebesfreud (Love’s sorrows and Love’s joys), Franz Lehar’s Hungarian Fantasy, and culminates with Johann Strauss, Jr.’s beloved Emperor Waltz.

Wilkins concludes, “The music of the Viennese cafes and taverns expressed best what the Viennese insistently professed: that life was good no matter the desperate state of their political, economic, and social systems.”

The Friends of the Orlando Philharmonic keep with the Viennese tradition of the performance, serving Vienna Roast coffee and Viennese delights at intermission.
