(Orlando, FL - May 30, 2008) – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra continues its Sounds of Summer Series with a program of music that places the bassoon, usually heard in a supportive role, right into the spotlight. Bassooner or Later takes place on Monday, June 30, 7:00 PM in the Margeson Theater in the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, 812 E. Rollins Street, Orlando.
This “Clown of the Orchestra” has a serious side, too, although not TOO serious. At Bassooner or Later, the lush sound of a quartet of bassoons will take you from French Baroque to Italian opera with a few humorous stops along the way. Included on the program are the Presto movement of Beethoven’s Trio in C Major, op. 87; The Swan from Carnival of the Animals, Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, arias from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville; along with comical selections including Peter Schickele’s Last Tango in Bayreuth; and an arrangement by Carol Miller, titled I was a Teenage Bassoon Player.
Performing on the program are Philharmonic Principal Bassoon Diane Bishop, Julie Fox, Laura Hauser and Ted Shistle. Philharmonic Executive Director David Schillhammer, also a bassoonist, hosts this program – and we might even get him to play his bassoon, too!
