Guest Conductor Dirk Meyer leads the Orlando Philharmonic in this program of holiday music that celebrates the spirit of the season. Music includes Chase’s Around the World at Christmas Time, Ravel’s Mother Goose: The Fairy Garden (Finale) and music from The Polar Express. The program also features soprano Susana Díaz and baritone Thomas Potter performing beloved holiday music including O Holy Night, Ave Maria, Joy to the World, Winter Wonderland, Silent Night, Let it Snow, Mel Torme’s Christmas Song and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.
Meyer was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Sarasota Orchestra in 2006, and quickly earned an outstanding reputation with musicians, audiences and critics, alike. He also serves as Music Director of the Sarasota Youth Orchestras, whose first season under his baton culminated in a Carnegie Hall performance in New York City. With a passionate interest in the music of our own time, Meyer founded the Art Nouveau Chamber Orchestra in 2003 to promote the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The orchestra has subsequently commissioned and premiered several new compositions. Meyer recently compiled 20th Century Chamber Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra Music: A Catalog, published by Scarecrow Press in 2010.
Díaz, who dazzled Philharmonic audiences with her beautiful voice in the Orlando Philharmonic’s production of Carmen, and who performs some Mozart arias in this season’s Focus Series concert, Time Machine: Mozart in Prague, has been featured by many leading regional companies including the Cincinnati Opera, Dayton Opera, Florida Grand Opera and Ballet Florida. Interpreted roles include Violetta in La Traviata, Gilda in Rigoletto, Adina in L’Elisir d’amore, Elvira in I Puritani, Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, and the title roles of Lakmé and Lucia di Lammermoor.
Potter, who has performed opera for over 25 years, has shared the stage with great artists including Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Kurt Moll, Dolora Zajick, and Deborah Voigt. Opera companies with which he has performed include Teatro Comunale ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ in Trieste, Palm Beach Opera, Nashville Opera, Opera Cordoba, Opera São Paulo, Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, Atlanta Opera, Utah Opera, Orlando Opera and Indianapolis Opera. Currently, Potter is the Voice and Choral Area Coordinator at the University of Central Florida.
