Orlando Philharmonic Concert to Feature Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 Performed by William Wolfram

(Orlando, FL – December 11, 2011) – On Saturday, January 14, the Orlando Philharmonic presents Wolfram Plays Brahms, a concert featuring renowned pianist William Wolfram performing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. The performance will be held at 8 p.m. at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W Livingston Street, Orlando. Sponsorship for the Super Series is provided by Darden Restaurants Foundation, and the artist sponsor for this concert is the Grand Bohemian Hotel.

Wolfram appeared with the Orlando Philharmonic during the 2009-10 Season’s Russian Masters program in which he performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. This season he performs Piano Concerto No. 1 by Brahms, a work that Music Director Christopher Wilkins calls “music of searing passion and extraordinary lyric beauty.” The concerto reflects Brahms’ effort to combine the piano and orchestra as equal partners, unlike earlier classical concertos, in which the orchestra effectively accompanied the pianist.

The January 14 concert program also features Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture and Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis, a work based on the melodies of Weber. As Wilkins explains, “German Romanticism was born with the music of Weber, whose melodies inspired Hindemith to compose his most thrilling work for large orchestra. Also featured is Capriccio, a sparkling work by local, award-winning composer and Rollins College professor Dan Crozier.

Wolfram was a silver medalist at both the William Kapell and the Naumburg International Piano Competitions, and a bronze medalist at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. A versatile recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician, he has won the respect of musicians and critics across the country and abroad. Wolfram has several recordings on the Naxos label. He has performed with dozens of the finest orchestras in the world, including performances in the US with the San Francisco, Saint Louis, Indianapolis, Seattle and New Jersey symphonies, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the National Symphony, the Florida Orchestra and the Grand Teton and Obispo Mozart festival orchestras, among many others.

Wolfram Plays Brahms is part of the orchestra’s Super Series. Tickets are $14.75, $29, $39, $52 and $70. Student discounts are available. A pre-concert reception, sponsored by the Grand Bohemian Hotel, will take place at 6 p.m. in the hotel’s cocktail lounge, 325 S Orange Avenue. Admission is $20, and includes hors d’oeuvres, cash bar, valet parking and transportation to and from the Bob Carr Centre.
