(Orlando, FL – June 15, 2010) – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presents the second program in its 2010 Sounds of Summer Series, Sovereign Brass: The Creature from the Brass Lagoon. The program takes place on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the Margeson Theater in the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, 812 E. Rollins Street, Orlando.

Popular brass quintet Sovereign Brass is back with this program of fiendish fun! Trombonist Jeffrey Thomas describes the program, “What evil character’s entrance would be complete without the wicked dah-dan-taaah of the brass in the score?  In music, as in the theater, the ‘bad guy’ roles often offer a wider range of emotion for the performer. Thus, we chose music that exudes a certain amount of latent power and force…a role often similar to that of a brass player in orchestral literature, where we often represent dark forces, violence or looming disaster. This concert conveys the music associated with the villain and anti-hero.”

Created in 1994, Sovereign Brass is an ensemble of six talented Central Florida musicians.  Comprising the Sovereign Brass are Mike Avila and Thomas Macklin, trumpets; Jeffrey Thomas, trombone; Kathleen Thomas, French horn, Ed Firth, tuba; and Mark Goldberg, percussion.  The goal of the Sovereign Brass is to bring the highest quality music to the widest possible audience and to present this music in a way that is entertaining and fun.  Instrumentation of five brass and one percussionist makes Sovereign Brass one of the most versatile ensembles available today.
