(Orlando, FL – January 7, 2011) – The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra presents a program filled with beloved music of Richard Rodgers in My Favorite Things – The Music of Richard Rodgers on Saturday, February 19, 2011. Two performances will take place at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, 401 W. Livingston Street, Orlando.
This concert is part of the orchestra’s 2010-2011 Super Series, sponsored by Darden Restaurants Foundation. The concert is sponsored by Siemens Energy, Inc.
Music Director Christopher Wilkins, who leads the Orlando Philharmonic in this program, shares his enthusiasm for the event, “Melody shot out of Richard Rodgers like water from a geyser, with little effort and tremendous force. Melodic genius is a special kind and only a very few composers have ever had it. Rodgers was one of them, his talent earning him several Tonys, Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, and a Pulitzer. He explained it this way:
‘Whenever I get an idea for a song, even before jotting down the notes, I can hear it in the orchestra, I can smell it in the scenery, I can see the kind of actor who will sing it, and I am aware of an audience listening to it.’”
Wilkins continues, “Music from Oklahoma, South Pacific, Carousel, and The Sound of Music will be performed along with iconic songs Rodgers created with lyricist Lorenz Hart, many of which are classics of the Great American Songbook. An extraordinary cast will bring these songs and characters to life. All the while, the Orlando Philharmonic will be showcased in some of the greatest Broadway scores of all time. There is astonishing performing talent everywhere you turn in Orlando. Michelle Knight, who starred in both Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady, will light up the stage, along with many of the luminaries of musical theater in Central Florida. They too are gifted melodists, knowing how to make a heart sing, a character swoon, and a melody soar.”
Audiences are sure to enjoy this delightful evening of music. Tickets to My Favorite Things – The Music of Richard Rodgers are $14.75, $29, $39, $52, $70. To purchase tickets, phone the Philharmonic’s box office at 407-770-0071, or visit the Philharmonic’s website at www.orlandophil.org.
