United Arts of Central Florida announced $1,619,430 in General Operating Support program grants to 13 local arts and cultural organizations and $1,070 in matching grants to three regional partners in order to enhance the arts, culture, history and science in our community. These grants provide stabilizing operating support to the region’s cornerstone cultural institutions. The grant pool was reduced by 4.4% in a challenging year.

For a second year, United Arts’ Board of Directors voted to allocate funds to preserve opera in Central Florida. Opera has a wealth of talent and supporters in the region, including audiences, donors, singers, musicians, designers, stagehands and more, as evidenced by Mad Cow Theatre and the Orlando Philharmonic’s successful two-show collaboration of Carmen and Porgy & Bess. United Arts reserved $153,853 in direct grants and designations in support of concert opera.

United Arts will also award $235,672 later in the year through grant programs for organizational projects and individual artists. In addition, United Arts anticipates investing $324,737 in curriculum-based arts education programs for K-12 public school students in the Central Florida area in 2010-2011. This programming is conducted by the major cultural organizations of the region.

“Even in a difficult economic environment, our partners – Central Florida businesses, governments, foundations and individuals – realize that an investment in the arts contributes to the economic vitality and quality of life of our region,” said United Arts President & CEO Margot H. Knight. “The arts generate jobs, provide revenue to local governments, expand educational experiences for children and attract visitors and new businesses to our region,” Knight added. “United Arts’ grant programs help this vital sector of our community thrive, and we’re deeply grateful for the wide support that makes it all possible.”

United Arts of Central Florida is a dynamic collaboration of 140 businesses, 8 governments and school districts, 26 foundations, more than 50 arts and cultural organizations, and 3,165 artists and individuals. This partnership works to enhance the quality and variety of cultural experiences available throughout Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties. Since its inception in 1989, United Arts has invested more than $107 million in local cultural organizations and cultural education. For more information please visit www.UnitedArts.cc.
