February 16 “Soundscapes” Concert to Feature Student Artwork

After the success of our partnership with Howard Middle School at January’s Scheherazade concert, the Philharmonic gave Howard Middle School’s visual arts students a challenge.  The orchestra provided recordings of Debussy’s Petite Suite, a piece that will be featured in the February 16 Focus concert, Soundscapes, conducted by Music Director Finalist Steven Jarvi, and asked students to create original artwork inspired by the music.

The four movement suite, an early composition of Debussy’s, features “En Bateau” (Sailing), “Cortege,” “Minuet,” and “Ballet.”  Howard Middle School visual artists rose to the challenge, creating dozens of pictures inspired by these works.  Their juried works will be showcased at the Plaza Live Theatre on concert night, as the lobby is transformed into an art gallery for one night only. A select few of the student works will be projected above stage during the performance.

We congratulate our partners at Howard Middle School on their talented students, and hope you will join us for Soundscapes on February 16.
